A Piece of History to Return to New Bremen
Plans are underway to rebuild a piece of New Bremen's history. Originally built for canal traffic, the Lockkeeper's House was a focal point in the community for canal boat operators or people who needed a night's rest during their travels. The structure stood next to the lock in New Bremen until 1966, when it was destroyed due to unstable conditions.
In 2006 the Ohio Department of Transportation awarded a grant to the village of New Bremen for the reconstruction of the lock. In September of '07 ODOT awarded the village with another grant to restore the Lockkeeper's House.
John Rausch of Garmann/Miller Architects-Engineers designed an exact replica of the original three-story building that will serve as the Miami-Erie Canal Visitors Center. The building will also house the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber, the New Bremen Historic Association and the Miami Erie Canal Corridor Association. The project should be under roof by December 2009 with the interior being completed by spring of 2010 at the very latest, according to Wayne York, New Bremen's village administrator.

Daylighting
Using natural light to illuminate learning spaces is one of the green practices that has been embraced most widely by the education community. Daylighting strategies enable schools and universities to save energy and money by reducing the use of artificial light, and, if they are designed effectively, can provide a learning environment that improves student performance.
Effective daylighting involves more than just adding windows to let light into a space. The light needs to be reflected and diffused so that it is spread throughout a space and doesn't cause a glare that can detract from concentration and learning.
School daylighting strategies typically use a combination of clerestory windows, light shelves, skylights, baffles, louvers and overhangs to admit enough light to provide a comfortable learning environment that relies less on artificial lights.
