LEED Introduces Rating System for Neighborhood Development

LEED for Neighborhood Development was recently added to the list of LEED certifications.
Develoed by USGBC in partnership with the Congress for the New Urbanism and the Natural Resources Defense Council; designed as a rating system that integrates the principles of smart growth, new urbanism, and green building. It is the first national standard for neighborhood design. LEED for Neighborhood Development emphasizes the creation of compact, walkable, vibrant, mixed-use neighborhoods with good connections to nearby communities. LEED encourages compact development patterns and the selection of sites that are within or adjacent to existing development to minimize habitat fragmentation and also help preserve areas for recreation. The mode of transportation increases and the dependance on automobiles decreases; choices such as buses, trains, car pools, bicycle lanes and sidewalks are typically more available near downtowns, neighborhood centers and town centers, locations that produce shorter automobile trips. A LEED for Neighborhood Development certification can help projects explain the environmental and community benefits of a project to residents and businesses in nearby areas. The rating system also encourages projects to work collaboratively with the existing neighborhood to make sure their needs are taken into account. The rising demand for housing in highly walkable or transit-accessible areas can result in higher tenancy rates.

"Away in a meadow all covered with snow
The little old groundhog looks for his shadow
The clouds in the sky determine our fate
If winter will leave us all early or late."

Elmwood Elementary Gym Open House Dedication

Area residents will get a chance to tour the recently completed Elmwood Elementary School addition, which includes a gymnasium, locker rooms and classrooms, during a formal dedication, ribbon cutting and open house slated for March 1st from 2 - 5 p.m.

Increased enrollment created the need for additional classrooms and gymnasium space. "The original school was designed to accommodate 400 to 450 children, enrollment now exceeds 600, which makes for some close quarters and cramped classrooms," says Nardini, school Superintendent. The 16,000 square foot facility was funded through a permanent improvement levy, approved by Shawnee voters a year and a half ago. The total cost of the project came to approximately $2.1 million.

After lengthy discussions with the board and members of the community, Shawnee Schools took the issue to the voters in November of 2007. It passed with broad support and ground was broken on July 15, 2008, according to a Shawnee news release.

The 8,595 square foot gymnasium is equipped with telescoping bleacher seating which accommodates approximately 360 spectators. The new gymnasium will also be used for middle school athletic events. The general contractor on the project was ACI Construction.
