For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together. For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad.

Kellen Mescher, of Minster, recently joined the Garmann/Miller staff as part of the landscape architecture department. In June 2009 he received a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from The Ohio State University's Knowlton School of Architecture. In college he was a member of the Architecture Honors and Scholars program and the student chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
As part of an Urban Planning design studio at Ohio State, Mescher's student design team's urban planning redevelopment project was highlighted in an April edition of The Columbus Dispatch. In summer 2008 he worked for the City of Troy Engineering Department and got involved in creating a marketing booklet to promote the design of a park along the Great Miami River. This past summer he designed a schematic concept plan for the project. Currently, the project is trying to gain public support and is part of the city's ongoing marketing campaign.
The 2005 Minster High School graduate joins a staff of 29 which includes architects, engineers, designers, planners, and technical personnel serving public and private clients throughout western Ohio.

Taking the LEED
Over the summer two employees of Garmann/Miller earned their Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Professional Accreditation. Laura Little, LEED AP BD+C and Gina Frick AIA, CIT, LEED AP passed their exams. Laura is an Architectural Designer and also concentrates on Interior Design for the firm and Gina is a Project Architect and focuses on Project Management.
LEED promotes a whole building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. The LEED rating system was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) as a benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance buildings.
The LEED accreditation is achieved by successfully passing an exam administered by the USGBC whereby individuals must exhibit a thorough understanding of green building practices and principles, and familiarity with LEED requirements, resources, and processes.

Labyrinth Adds Touch of Design and Comfort

As part of the 799 South Main Street renovations, landscapers constructed an 11-circuit labyrinth out of brick pavers that serves Lutheran Social Services of Northwestern Ohio in Lima.
Labyrinths have been around for centuries, but they were reintroduced to the Lima area during Support Group Facilitator trainings given by Kathleen Wentz, a consultant and trainer with Wentz and Wentz & Associates out of Youngstown.
Participants in the trainings have found the labyrinth building exercise to be a time of enlightenment and personal growth and many have gone to visit other labyrinths in the area. The labyrinth is a maze and there are no tricks to it or dead ends. It has a single circular path that winds its way into the center. The person walking it uses the same path to return from the center and the entrance becomes the exit. The path is in full view, which allows a person to be quiet and focus internally.
"In a time where people are searching for symbols to give meaning to their lives, the labyrinth has emerged as a deeply intuitive tool and a place for simple reflection," Wentz said. "In this way it becomes a tool to relax and free the mind. The simple, repetitive motion of following the path allows the traveler the opportunity for problem solving, physical and emotional healing, creativity and positive change."
Training sessions have been offered on the use of the labyrinth. The labyrinth and courtyard surrounding it is available to anyone wishing to use it. Clients at the agency will be able to use the space to help enhance their patient's treatment. The space is fully accessible for those in wheelchairs, the elderly and others with disabilities.
Thanks to Alice Giesken for providing us with the picture and information on the labyrinth. |
